Why you should be grateful in life?

mind Dec 03, 2022

Everything in the universe is in perfect balance. When we become aware of this, our hearts overflow with unconditional love and gratitude. At that moment, we feel incredible gratitude to those around us. We shed tears of gratitude, as we understand the divine order and perfect harmony that reigns in the entire universe. We’re grateful for everything we have in life, and everything that’s true becomes ours. After that, we need neither belittle ourselves for our shortcomings nor judge others for not being like us. Even if the perfect order is hidden so it can’t be easily seen, when you start looking for it you’ll realise that it’s always been there. It’s existed in our minds and hearts from the very beginning of existence.

‘Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody's business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbours worthy.’
― Thomas Merton

2. What does it mean to be grateful?

Everything in balance evokes a feeling of gratitude. Everything we judge as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ is the result of our judgments. We judge others and even ourselves… Then we find ourselves in a state of consciousness lacking gratitude.  We fail to see the source of the love within us. Nevertheless, when you’re there in the state of unconditional love, you’ll see that everything in life is already in balance and there’s no judgment in its occurrence. In the moment, our gratitude to our own existence, and to everyone, increases. With more gratitude, we get more opportunities in life.

According to quantum physics, opposites complement each other. We embrace our wholeness if we embrace both sides of life, which consist of supports and obstacles. Therefore, we might view good and bad as opposites of each other, but good creates evil and evil creates good. They always create each other in life. So know that everything in balance inspires gratitude in us perfectly, and everyone of equal or opposite value teaches us to love the whole. We are here to learn to love everything.

3. Why is being grateful important?

When we believe in the perfection of this universe and are grateful, the path to wisdom opens up for us. We’re aware that facing all that we dislike is here to improve us. We begin to see true love and realising that we willingly attract this into our lives. Because each one is for us to love the whole. When we accept and love our other halves, we accept ourselves as we are. We can start seeing both sides clearly, we open our heart to love and become more centered and objective. Thus, our self-confidence and our potential for success increase immediately.

We become wise when we realise that love is the answer to all questions.’

Dr John Demartini

In a state of true love and gratitude, our consciousness expands and our sensory awareness increases. As our sphere of influence expands, we may even see ourselves beginning to influence those far away from us. Miracles will happen when you are filled with high inspiration and a feeling of gratitude arises. This is something that not only affects us, but also those around us. This is something incredible.

Feeling grateful or appreciative of someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that you appreciate and value into your life.’

What are the things in life you can be grateful for?

Keep a record of the things you are grateful for each day. Write down everything or at least a few things you are grateful for. If you’re still thinking about things to be thankful for, here are the main topics to consider.

1. Your life

Appreciate your own life. Remember that life is exactly as it should be. However, when we live in a fantasy world, the illusions we create will be the biggest barriers to our gratitude. Be grateful and appreciate the little things in life. List all the things in your life that you call mistakes or failures and see how they have actually served you. You’ll see one by one that everything you see as a failure is a step towards your success today.

I thank the universe for taking everything it has taken and

Giving to me everything it is giving

—balance.’

Rupi Kaur

2. Your friends

It’s hard to accept our closest friends as they always are. You become free from your thoughts about them when you realise how they serve you with their mere presence.  The world is built on opposition. If we can see this balance, we’ll be filled with genuine gratitude. Remember that your friends have different values and don’t necessarily see the world the way you do. You can’t judge them for not living up to your values. As long as you project your own expectations onto them, you’ll experience disappointment and move away from gratitude. You won’t be able to hold back your tears of gratitude when you see how much good has actually been done to you. Write your friends a letter expressing how grateful you are. Then wait and see how this will miraculously change your life.

Is it possible to have a relationship with another in which there is no friction whatsoever? It is possible only when I understand what love is.’

Krishnamurti

3. Your family

There’s always a perfect balance in our family dynamics too. Everyone in the family has a role to play, and each role supports each other. It’s possible to see opposite characters in a family. Accept them as they are and watch what role they play in your development. Each role is a factor in the development of the other. For example, one person in the family might be hardworking, while the other might be very lazy. Each one is so that you can see this balance. This will be your genuine awakening to the life and after that, it’s impossible not to be grateful.

Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.’

-Plato, 'The Symposium'.

4. Your Courage and Strength

You might experience times when things don’t work out. Divorce, a broken heart, not having good health, business failures… But if you keep thinking something is wrong and you don’t appreciate what’s going well, this life will become unbearable for you. The wisdom here is to be able to perceive that there’s actually goodness in a crisis-creating event. Take time for yourself every day. Take five minutes a day to write down three beautiful things that happen every day. Even on the worst days, there is usually a good thing or two to hold onto. Sometimes shedding a light on these can give you the strength and courage to keep going.

Turn your wounds into wisdom.’

— Oprah Winfrey

5. Your health

Be grateful for your body. See that both health and sickness serve us. They both have something to be thankful for. The effect of gratitude provides physiological relaxation, peace and order. When we’re overflowing with gratitude, all the pressure and stress in our body disappear and we can sleep regularly. If we’re out of balance of gratitude and love, and our perceptions are one-sided, our body will try to bring us into the balance of love. It will repeatedly send signals to our body with different diseases to balance it and to warn us . When you open your heart to the effect of gratitude, you’ll find healing for all your diseases. Once your mind is completely filled with gratitude, your body will begin to heal. There’s no greater healer in this world than love.

Keeping your body healthy is an expression of gratitude to the whole cosmos

- the trees, the clouds, everything.’

Thich Nhat Hanh
