WHY WE SUFFER

mind Apr 03, 2022

In his epic poem Paradise Lost, English poet John Milton says, "The mind is its own place and, in itself, can make a heaven of hell or a hell of heaven." Our mind plays an enormous role in how our life turns out, doesn't it? As Milton's said, what goes through our mind has the power to drastically transform our world. That is why the main reason for all our suffering is our illusions.

Our one-sided perception is the only reason why we turn life into hell. When we label what goes on in our life as wrong, harmful, unfair, or immoral, we fall into a hellish pit and suffer immensely. On the contrary, when we describe events as right, beneficial, just or moral, this time, we fall into an illusion of positivity. And then, we end up experiencing tragic events that will wake us up from this illusion.

Neutrality Leads to Truth

Regardless of being negative or positive, illusions are concepts that we create in our mind and have troubling consequences. However, having a balanced, realistic and objective point of view leads to a much happier and more peaceful life.

A balanced, realistic and objective point of view is a neutral point of view where there are no subjective perceptions, only the truth. This neutral point of view makes it possible to see life as it really is instead of looking at it behind the veil of our own interpretations and perceptions of right and wrong.

The Difference Between Seeing and Perceiving

Dear readers, seeing and perceiving are two different things. The forebrain is responsible for seeing, whereas perception has to do with the hindbrain. The forebrain is also known as the executive mind. It is the neutral area where the executive faculties reside. The forebrain sees the truth.

The hindbrain is where perceptions are formed. The lower consciousness, emotional impulses and involuntary reactions all stem from the hindbrain. This part of the brain interprets everything from a subjective point of view.

Life and Truth

Our life is a story that we view from behind the veil of our own perception. There are emotional ups and downs, involuntary reactions, addictions, and suffering. All this is an indication that life is a strange and meaningless place.

However, the truth is never meaningless. The true order and the universal system harbor divine meaning and power. People guided by their hindbrain and amygdala, who struggle with their subjective perceptions and emotional burdens, pursue pleasure and try to avoid pain. These people lead their lives with a one-sided, distorted point of view. Life is a constant struggle for survival for them. People with a distorted point of view always struggle, whereas the mind that can see the truth is in a state of peace and surrender.
