Throughout time, history has been interested in understanding what the masters or leaders do and why. Because true leadership, true mastery is quite rare and seen in very few people. The science of history has also identified some common traits of leaders. Now let’s look at these traits together.

1. Some leadership behaviours are influenced by genetics, and leaders begin to socialize at an early age.

2. They possess the basic aspects of behaviours that support the leadership role, such as creating, developing and performance management.

3. Their learning and adaptation skills are strong.

4. They make their employees or followers believe that they can accomplish their goals and attain satisfactory and rewarding achievements. They always lead those around them to reach for more.

5. They have determination and faith. They can help people through difficult transition periods in their lives.

6. In crises or when people need to make big changes in their behaviour, leaders can exhibit transformational actions that allow radical change. Such leaders are more likely to be perceived as charismatic by their followers.

A leader’s natural charisma or ability to influence their followers manifests itself best when followers think that the leader represents their highest values or adapts to them.

Charismatic leaders integrate their followers’ past, hopes and highest values into their own coherent story. Followers think that their leader acts in favour of their collective interests. Leaders develop narratives in which their sense of self is regarded by their followers as a symbol of their group or social identity.

Actually, charisma is not a character trait of a leader, and it can turn into a trap from time to time. Charisma is a trait created by followers seduced by a romantic notion of leadership. The great leaders of causes or organizations that do not support a certain audience of followers are not perceived by these followers as charismatic.

Followers should perceive their leader as a member of the group they are in, who advances their goals and objectives. They should perceive their leader as “one of them”. The charisma of a leader is proportional to the perception of their followers and how much they support their highest values or help achieve their priorities.

Charismatic leaders prefer to say “we” instead of “I”. There are always masses of followers that gather organically around them, who carry a sense of family. In addition to making themselves attractive to their followers, they try to use poetic language and utilize great listening skills.

Charismatic leaders are sincere and adaptable. They offer a firm but gentle handshake. They are open and inviting. They show genuine interest, listen attentively and ask meaningful questions. They do not compare themselves with others. They are warm but strong and highly self-confident. They are authentic and intelligent, authoritative and visionary.

7. They can take on both interactional and transformational roles.

8. They not only gain personal achievements but also organize others into doing the same.

9. They always act in line with their goals and values. What they say and what they do is one. They show no effort to appear as someone else.

10. Their collective behaviours send consistent signals to their audience.

11. They encourage working groups and self-leadership, allowing others to become leaders.

12. They take responsibility for their destiny.

13. They make a difference; they are original and unique.

14. They add value to organizations, communities, nations.

15. They listen attentively and confirm what they hear, which helps them gain knowledge and build trust.

16. They are always open to alternative opinions or points of view.

17. They boldly inspire people to realize their life goals.

18. They predict and prepare for future social changes, thereby preventing possible accusations and reactions.
